Here lies a gentleman bold Who was so very brave He went to lengths untold, And on the brink of the grave Death had on him no hold. By the world he set small store-- He frightened it to the core-- Yet somehow, by Fate's plan, Though he'd lived a crazy man, When he died he was sane once more. Anonymous
About This Quote

Over the years, many people have assumed that William Shakespeare must have been crazy to think he could write so many masterpieces. They are wrong. He was sane when he wrote, but crazy when he died. He lived a crazy life full of too much love and too much hate.

Can you imagine? You are William Shakespeare, world famous playwright, poet, and actor. You have your pick of all the women in the world. But you chose to live alone, refusing to marry.

You have no one to share your joys or sorrows with. You are proud of your work, but you are proud of it only to an extent. Then you die and are buried in an unmarked grave until two hundred years later when your works are discovered.

There is already a statue erected in your honor at Stratford-on-Avon, yet it doesn't say what you look like or reveal where you were born or died! Actually, it does say that, but only because the town was named after William Shakespeare all those years ago! This poem is about how there is no proof of his death even though he clearly thought he was going to die young. He did not want anyone to know where he was buried or who had him buried there; he wanted it to be secret for the rest of time while his body rotted away out of sight and out of mind--until now!
